Installation, audio-piece 2024 @ Diplomausstellung MTR ZHdK

This is the story of how I created a piece of music by outsourcing all the work. 

It's about locality, attunement, search of situatedness in times of delocalised, global, linear modes of work and survival.

The script

Create a profile on fiverr.com

Ask any drummer to record you a drum track.

Ask any bassist to ad a base track to that drum track.

Ask any pianist to ad keys to the drum and base track.

Ask any writer to write some lyrics to the drum the base and the key track.

Ask any vocalist to sing the lyrics to the drum the base and the key track.

Ask any mixing engineer to mix the drum the base the key and the vocal track.

Ask any mastering engineer to master the drum the base the key and the vocal track.

Publish your track and give it a name.

Always pick the first, cheapest and best rated option.

Try to stay in the budget of 99.-.

You’re not allowed to change or manipulate the stems and audio-files. You’re just allowed to send files back and fourth and do communication with the contributors according to the script.

The drummer as the first contributor gets the instruction: the piece needs to be at least one Minute long (to prevent super short piece)

With a sounddesign of emails and private messages I react on the new edition of Sophie Taeuber-Arps gigantic letter collection. In real time the sounddesign is being modulated by 3 layers of carpet, in referenence to Mai-Thu Perrets work "Untitled (Green Oval)". The score for the modulation pattern is the Neon Piece „Untitled (Different Ways), aswell by Mai-Thu Perret, which is itself a reaction to an illustration of stitching patterns by Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Blanche Gauchat ("Unterrichtsdokumentation Zeichnen für textile Berufe. Anleitung zum Unterricht im Zeichnen für textile Berufe").

From the beginning of our research in Trogen, the copy of the stitching patterns of Sophie stuck with me, intruiged by the strong visual qualities of it. I had it with me the whole week. When we later entered the exhibition the first time, my eyes were immediately drawn to Mai-Thu Perrets Neon Piece, it struck me with joy. The very simple and rudimentary lines remind me of sound waves or oscillators in sound synthesis. They are the building blocks of more elaborate structures.

In my Performance I'm reading those lines, like one would read a score.
